Exploring Ballroom Dance Steps While Passing Clubs

I've been taking ballroom dance lessons for a year and a half now. As a juggler and club passer, I guess it's only natural that I'd want to combine the two, in some way. After all, doing the box step is very much the same timing as doing a three-count passing pattern, etc. So this class, will be just what the title says, experimentations. After working on paying attention to the timing of our juggling, and timing to music, we will incorporate the dance steps. I will go over the basic dance steps that we will be connecting with our club passing.

Basic Club Tricks

Once your basic cascade pattern starts to settle down, it is time to add a few tricks to your repertoire. Each trick is broken down into easy to practice segments. You will learn the basics and timing of each trick with one club, and how to add the new movement to your juggling pattern. I will demonstrate each trick, and then walk around the group fixing individual problems. These tricks are building blocks for more complicated tricks that you'll eventually want to learn. The tricks presented will include under the leg, over the top, behind the back, various doubles, flourishes, under the arm, and thumb rolls.

5 Ball Siteswap Theory & Improving Your Siteswap Technique

This workshop is intended to communicate various ways to improve your siteswap technique with 5 balls, in addition to demonstrations of these concepts in certain 5 ball siteswaps. The workshop mainly covers 'theory' in terms of siteswaps, without any certain siteswap being explicitly taught here. Essentially, you will be given the tools to succeed at whatever present and future siteswap ventures your heart may desire. A notebook or device to take notes with is recommended, but certainly not required.

3 Club Shoulder Rolls

3 club shoulder rolls (first popularized by Lauge Benjaminsen and others in the early 2010s era) is a trick with 3 clubs where the club is thrown/pushed onto the shoulder and then bounced off of the juggler's upper back and smoothly back into the 3 club pattern. I previously made a YouTube tutorial on this trick circa 2012 or so, but my teaching methods for the trick have certainly improved, and I'm eager to show them to you! No notebook required :)

Luke Wilson Spin Control for Clubs

Club Spin Control by Luke Wilson (taught by Matt Hall): Luke Wilson taught this workshop for years before passing away in 2012, and after much research and discussion with many friends and contemporaries of Luke, Matt Hall has re-constructed his sequence of instruction and some of the various exercises he used in teaching students to control spin, as well as methods of correction for when a club was over/under-spun. Added together, these exercises pave the way to some amazing tricks in their own right, and definitely will broaden the student’s general club technical vocabulary.
